new job!

yay! i have a new job---this is why i haven't posted in the last few weeks--many, many interviews; many, many panic attacks.

still working on doing the whole paleo thing--but have i mentioned how much i *adore* ice cream?  and coffee with cream and sugar?  (#beastie boys:  i like my sugar with coffee and cream!)

resolutions no one cares about:
--will figure out how to post pics from camera *and* phone (everyone say "ooooohhhh")
--will post more often, even if it's as lame as this one...

HIstory is made to seem unfair

So, I decided that this was The Week I would finally finish the thesis.  So far, I have done:

  • multiple loads of laundry
  • made four quarts of chicken broth
  • exercised
  • read half of an Ann Perry novel
  • watched a bluebird contemplate moving into the backyard birdhouse
  • talked on the phone to: my dad, two former colleagues, and two recruiters
  • read most of this month's Esquire
  • printed out all my remaining notes for the thesis
Note that nothing except the last one is of any damn benefit to the stated goal.

Primal Eating

Ah, so I realized that I mentioned Primal/Paleo eating in the last post, and didn't really explain it.  The simplest explanation is that it's eating the way humankind did before the Agricultural Revolution.  No grain, no beans, dairy optional in limited amounts, no sugar.  It is low-carb, but in a way I find friendlier than Atkins.  I've been cooking for the last couple of months from the cookbook you see here--The Primal Blueprint Cookbook--so far, it's been great.  We had the Transylvanian Stockpot Soup last night for dinner and it was fabulous!  (Okay, anything with bacon *and* kielbasa is going to be pretty tasty!)

Introduction

Like the song says, "how did I get here?"  I remember all the things I thought about being when I was young and planning--a housewife with a bunch of kids and dogs, and a Victorian farmhouse; a lawyer; a writer...

As it turns out in my middle age, I'm none of those things.  (I did try writing for awhile, but decided that 'starving artist' sounded much much better than the actuality.)  I'm married, which I love; no children, which I sometimes regret; and unemployed, which I hope changes soon; and a student, which I would like to complete.

Along with many others, I was laid off from a job a few months ago.  As I sit here, I'm waiting to hear back regarding an interview (the recruiter *promised* that the company would call today).  I work in the pharmaceutical industry, which I never thought I would.  Or rather, I'm waiting to work again in that career.  While I wait, I write my thesis.  (Or don't write it, as the case may be.)

What will this blog be about?  Some cooking, I think, since that's something I love to do, and the husband and I are getting pretty committed to the Primal/Paleo diet.  Some reading, since all frustrated writers are voracious readers.  And some mulling--I'm not as successful as I would like to be, would have liked to have been.  I was never a straight-A student, even though I tried (okay, tried when it was at all feasible  Trigonometry wasn't even feasible to pass).  I was just always a B/B plus kind of a person.  And that's okay, too.  The world is filled with people like us, too.  So, let's hang out.
